Scottish Kilts
When people think of Scotland and Scottish traditions, they inevitably think
of Scottish kilts. Kilts are, in fact, a Celtic tradition that began as
early as the 16th century (a
full history can be found here). Featured most
prominently in Scottish kilts are the distinct tartans that signify clan
membership.
Technically, the kilt is a garment worn on a
gentleman in place of pants--the "skirt," as it were. It is rare, however,
that one would wear a kilt without other elements of traditional Highland
Dress. At the very least, kilt hose (the
traditional knee-high woolen socks) and a kilt pin
would be necessary, whether you've opted for a kilt for sport or one to
introduce into your casual wardrobe.
Ladies' Scottish Kilts
There is some uncertainty among non-Scots as to whether ladies wear Scottish
kilts. Technically they do not, as the kilt is a part of men's Highland
Dress. That being said, however, for all intents and purposes, women
(Highland, Lowland, and otherwise) can and do wear kilts--if you consider a
pleated woman's skirt made from a clan tartan to be a
kilted skirt or ladies' kilt. At Great Scot
Shop, we offer a variety of lengths and styles
appropriate for casual and formal Highland Dress for women as well as men,
and you can get yours custom made in your plaid.
If you're a gentleman wearing a kilt for a special occasion, a formal
dinner, a wedding, or Highland Games, you'll want a full ensemble. The only
other place beside the kilt that you're likely to use your clan tartan is in
your tie, but there are a number of other essential components to formal
attire. The picture on our men's highland dress page
provides you a clearly labeled diagram of all of the elements of
Highland Dress. Of course, you can order all of these pieces from our shop,
custom-designed to fit you to perfection.
