If you are an American Scot with pride in your heritage, you can display your coat of arms or family crest for all to see. At Great Scot Shop, we give you a variety of options so that you can display your family's coat or crest proudly and with style. A coat of arms or family crest will lend distinction to everything from a shirt to a travel mug, a whiskey flask to a pewter plate.

The Histories of the Coat of Arms and Family Crest

In their original form, coats of arms were part of the structure of nobility--once elevated to noble status, a family needed a visual way of displaying that status, since their written name would go uncomprehended by the largely illiterate public. The coat of arms, once designed and approved, was granted by the king or local noble to a single man, who was then able to pass it down to his descendants. In Scotland, the authority who grants and maintains the records in matters of heraldry is the Lord Lyon, King of Arms.

Typically, coats of arms are meant for the head of the family. Clansmen and clanswomen would wear crests instead of arms. Crests were granted to the clan's chief, and all those who wanted to demonstrate their association with the clan would wear their clan crest surrounded with a strap and buckle, inside which would be their clan motto or slogan.

If you are looking for an elegant and stylish way of trumpeting your Scottish heritage, wearing or displaying your clan's crest or coat of arms is a great start. If you're already an ardent clan supporter, you might want to look at a kilt pin or badge with the clan crest to dress up your Highland Attire. Either way, when you order through greatscotshop.com, you can be sure of quality products at a great price.
