Dirks

The Highland Dirk, since the 15th century had been distinctive from European daggers to having a single edge, the heavier blade perfectly balanced for use as a short sword. The oldest dirks had knotwork pommels, plain scabbards and simple ornamentation. The 18th century brought embellished scabbards to accomodate knife and fork in the pattern of the Highland Regimental Officers.

All dirks are made in Scotland by the Art Pewter Company. All have hand-wrought tempered steel blades and are gift boxed with historical notes.

The wearing of a dirk (or kilt dagger) is thought to have evolved from the practice of carrying a sgian dubh. The "black dagger" takes its name from the use of the word "black" meaning secret or covert as in "blackmail". Originally worn in a concealed scabbard in the armpit, these were wielded by Scotsmen in a time when wearing kilts and going armed was made illegal. Once that law was repealed, it became traditional to wear these small knives in the top of the kilt hose as a sign to others that you were armed and as a way of keeping the weapon close to hand. The dirk is slightly longer, and is worn through a loop at the kilt's waist.
